It covers Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria, Malta, the UK, India, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, the UAE, Argentina and Russia, plus the usual sanctioned jurisdictions. Turkey and Brazil are absent.
The full Gate restricted-locations list (2026)
Clause 2.5 of Gate’s User Agreement, last updated 22 July 2026, names 35 Restricted Locations. The clause opens with “include but are not limited to” and closes with “and so on”, so 35 is a floor, not a ceiling. Gate adds that it “may in our absolute discretion update the list… without any notice to you”. The order below follows Gate’s own sentence; the category column is our classification.

Five EU member states, plus Malta, on one list
Gate restricts Germany, France, Spain, the Netherlands and Austria — five EU member states — and Malta on top. No other exchange we track blocks Spain. Bitget blocks Germany, France and Austria; KuCoin blocks France and the Netherlands; Bybit is licensed across the EEA. For a European reader the practical effect is that Gate is closed in most of the large continental markets, and the alternative depends on which one you are in.
Under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, an exchange serving EU retail users needs a CASP authorisation from one member state, passported across the bloc. National transition periods ended on 1 July 2026. Gate holds a Maltese licence through a separate company, described below, but the global gate.com platform lists those five states as restricted rather than serving them. If you are in Germany, our best exchange in Germany comparison shows which platforms hold the relevant authorisation.
Malta and Hong Kong are restricted because Gate runs separate platforms there
Both entries look strange until you read the footers. Gate Technology Ltd, registration number C89337, trades as Gate.MT from The Core, Msida, Malta, and is “licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority as a Class 4 Virtual Financial Assets (VFA) Services Provider” for operating a VFA exchange and custodian or nominee services. Gate states that Gate Technology Ltd “is an independent entity and operates separately from Gate”, with distinct clientele, operations and management.
Hong Kong works the same way. Gate’s own on-site notice tells Hong Kong residents that the global platform “has imposed trading restrictions on your account and will close it by 31 January 2024” and that “Hong Kong residents may only use the services of Gate.HK”. Turkey is the third arm — Gate Kripto Varlık Alım Satım Platformu AŞ, based in Maslak, Istanbul, trading as Gate.TR — and, tellingly, Turkey is not on the restricted list at all.
What the local-platform split means for you
Being routed to a local platform is not the same as being banned. It does mean a different legal entity, a different product range and, on Gate.MT, a licence that covers spot trading, custody and nominee services only: Gate states that other products “are provided by other group companies and do not fall within the scope of Gate.MT’s regulated services under the VFA licence”. Check which entity you are contracting with before you assume a product exists in your market.
Asia-Pacific: the widest regional block of any exchange we track
Thirteen of the 35 entries are in Asia-Pacific: mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and Pakistan, with Uzbekistan and the UAE alongside. That is a far heavier footprint than Bybit or MEXC, neither of which names India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines. Argentina is the odd one out in Latin America, where Brazil stays open.
For readers in those markets the takeaway is simple. If you are in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines, Gate restricts you while at least one exchange we track does not. If you are in Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China or Malaysia, the block is close to universal and a locally licensed venue is usually the only compliant route.
If Gate restricts your country, who accepts you?
Five of the 35 entries have a clean answer, and several have none. Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Austria point to a MiCA-authorised platform; India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines point to Bybit or MEXC; the United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland China are closed everywhere we track. Match your country to the line below.
- Germany, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Austria: you need a MiCA-authorised exchange. Bybit EU GmbH holds a MiCAR licence granted by Austria’s FMA in May 2025 and passported across the EEA — see Bybit in Germany and Bybit in the Netherlands.
- India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Pakistan, Cambodia: Bybit and MEXC name none of these countries in their own restricted lists. KuCoin blocks Thailand; Bitget paused new Indian sign-ups on 6 February 2026.
- United Kingdom: MEXC blocks the UK outright, Bitget runs spot only and Bybit is limited under the FCA financial promotions regime. See UK alternatives.
- United States, Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Malaysia: Bybit, MEXC, Bitget, KuCoin and BloFin block all or most of these. See US alternatives and Canada alternatives.
- Japan, South Korea, the UAE, Argentina, Russia, Uzbekistan: we have not confirmed a compliant global alternative for these, and we will not invent one. ⚠ Not confirmed — verify with your own regulator.
- Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Myanmar, Venezuela, Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk: sanctioned or conflict-affected. There is no compliant alternative.
- Turkey, Brazil, Nigeria: not on Gate’s list at all. Gate serves Turkey through Gate.TR.

How Gate compares with the exchanges we track
Gate is the strictest exchange in this table across Europe and Asia at the same time. It is the only one that names Spain, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Pakistan; it is also one of only two, with Bitget, to block Germany and France together. Where Gate is unusually open is Turkey and Brazil, which it leaves off the list entirely.

Frequently asked questions
Seven questions readers type about Gate access, answered from clause 2.5 of the User Agreement of 22 July 2026 and Gate’s own entity disclosures. Short version: 35 named Restricted Locations, an open-ended clause, and three separate local platforms in Malta, Hong Kong and Turkey.
How many countries does Gate.io restrict in 2026?
Clause 2.5 of Gate’s User Agreement, last updated 22 July 2026, names 35 Restricted Locations. The clause says the list “include but are not limited to” those entries and ends with “and so on”, and Gate reserves the right to update it without notice, so 35 is the published floor rather than a complete count.
Is Gate.io available in Germany?
No. Germany is named as a Restricted Location in Gate’s User Agreement, alongside France, Spain, the Netherlands and Austria. Gate holds a Maltese licence through a separate company, Gate Technology Ltd, but the global gate.com platform lists those five EU member states as restricted rather than serving them.
Why is Malta on Gate’s restricted list if Gate is licensed in Malta?
Because the licence sits with a different company. Gate Technology Ltd, registration number C89337, trades as Gate.MT and is licensed by the Malta Financial Services Authority as a Class 4 Virtual Financial Assets Services Provider. Gate states that it is an independent entity operating separately from Gate, with distinct clientele and management.
Can Hong Kong residents use Gate?
Not the global platform. Gate’s own notice tells Hong Kong residents that trading restrictions were imposed and accounts closed by 31 January 2024, and that Hong Kong residents may only use the services of Gate.HK. Hong Kong also appears in the Restricted Locations list in clause 2.5.
Is Gate restricted in India and Thailand?
Yes. India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia and Pakistan are all named in clause 2.5. That is the widest Asia-Pacific block of any exchange we track: Bybit and MEXC name none of those seven countries in their own restricted lists.
Does Gate restrict Turkey or Brazil?
No. Neither country appears in the 35 entries. Gate serves Turkey through a separate local company, Gate Kripto Varlık Alım Satım Platformu AŞ, trading as Gate.TR from Istanbul. Brazil is simply absent from the list, unlike Argentina, which is restricted.
Can I use a VPN to access Gate from a restricted location?
We do not recommend it. Gate’s User Agreement puts the obligation on you to stop using the site if you are in a Restricted Location, and exchanges freeze balances and withdrawals when a geo-restriction breach surfaces during identity verification. Use a platform that legally accepts your country instead.
